Old Stamp Catalogs
| Old stamp
catalogs can be a valuable resource for a collector. They often
represent what items were available to the cataloger, although as catalogs
became more plentiful, some catalogers used the work of others or relied on
written descriptions. Forgeries of US local and carrier stamps were
probably available in the latter half of 1861.

The Berger-Levrault catalog is the world's first stamp catalog. Cal Hahn, in his Incunabula series of articles, states "Berger-Levrault lithographically reproduced an 11-page handwritten check list of stamps September 1, 1861. A second printing followed in December, 1861." It is interested to note listings for Smith's City Express Post 2c Paid and Warwick's in these editions (unlisted today). The December edition included a 3c stamp for Boyd's! For the September 1861 catalog, click here (4MB PDF). For the December 1861 catalog, click here (5MB PDF). |
