The Carriers And Locals Society

Welcome to The Carriers And Locals Society
A non-profit philatelic Society founded in 1991, the Society publishes a quarterly journal, The Penny Post.  The Society is dedicated to the study of United States carriers, locals and express posts, as well as the forgeries, reprints, and fantasies created of them.

The aims of the Carriers And Locals Society are:

  1. To further the understanding of the operations of the private mail companies in the United States during the  nineteenth century.  These companies frequently made innovations in the handling of the mail that were later copied by the Government postal service.

  2. To study the postal emissions and the postal history of these private mail companies.

  3. To study the postal emissions and postal history of the government Carrier service that came into being largely to compete with the private companies.

  4. To study and catalog the proliferations of reprints, imitations and fantasies of these issues.  These were many times generated simply to satisfy the growing interest of collectors.
